This bible is a King James Version and as such should be familiar to anyone. Each page is split in two, one side containing the KJV text and the other side containing E.W. Bullinger’s notes. There is also an impressive set of appendices that cover almost any topic you could ask about. The Companion Bible is STILL one of THE BEST study Bibles on the market, bar none. It does take some time to learn how to use, but once the reader has comprehended the outlines, and the special indexing into the marginal notes, they will discover it is still one of the best Bible helps on the market today. Very few others even comes close, including very sophisticated computer versions. As you read the KJV text, there are notations that tell you when Bullinger has something to say about the verse or word noted. These comments are in the side bar next to the KJV text. These ‘notes’ help you to break the bible down into an organized outline, often revealing a deeper meaning in the texts. The appendices included are small essays and charts explaining everything from Greek grammar, to Hebrew customs and figures of speech. You simply cannot understand any bible unless you fully read and understand Bullinger’s appendices. Be warned that some appendices contain information that is controversial. Rest assured, however, that Bullinger offers biblical and historical proof for each of his statements. Judge for yourself if these have any merit. E.W. Bullinger never really wanted his name associated with this bible so as to let his work, not his name, speak for itself. His comments in the Companion Bible reflect the time period in which he lived (late 1800’s) and offer insight into many Christian theories that were new in his time, but to us now seem old. For those of you who may not be familiar with Charles Haddon Spurgeon, here is a little background: C.H. Spurgeon, (June 19, 1834 – January 31, 1892) was a British Baptist preacher who remains highly influential amongst Reformed Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the « Prince of Preachers. » Born in Kelvedon, Essex, Spurgeon’s conversion to Christianity came on January 6, 1850 at the age of fifteen. On his way to a scheduled appointment, a snow storm forced him to cut short his intended journey and to turn into a Primitive Methodist chapel in Colchester where, in his own words: « God opened his heart to the salvation message. » The text that moved him was Isaiah 45:22 « Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is none else. » Later that year he was admitted to the church at Newmarket on April 4, 1850. His baptism followed on May 3 in the river Lark, at Isleham. Later that same year he moved to Cambridge. He preached his first sermon in 1851 and, from the beginning of his ministry, his style and ability were considered to be far above average. In the same year, he was ordained as pastor of the small Baptist church at Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire. In April 1854, after preaching for only three months and just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, was called to the pastorate of London’s famed New Park Street Chapel, Southwark (formerly pastored by the Particular Baptist theologian John Gill). Within a few months of his call his powers as a preacher made him famous. The following year the first of his sermons in the « New Park Street Pulpit » was published. Spurgeon’s sermons were published in printed form every week, and enjoyed a high circulation. By the time of his death in 1892, he had preached almost thirty-six hundred sermons and published forty-nine volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations, and devotions. Immediately following his fame was controversy. The first attack in the Press appeared in the Earthen Vessel in January 1855. His preaching, although not revolutionary in substance, was a plain spoken and direct appeal to the people using the Bible to provoke them to consider the claims of Jesus Christ. Critical attacks from the media persisted throughout his life. The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000 — all in the days before electronic amplification. Here’s a little history on Matthew Henry, including some tidbits of information maybe you didn’t know! Matthew Henry was born near Wales on October 18, 1662. Henry was primarily home-educated by his father, Rev. Philip Henry, and also at the Thomas Doolittle academy from 1680-1682. Henry first started studying law in 1686, but instead of pursuing a career in law he began to preach in his neighborhood.After the declaration of liberty of conscience by James II in 1687, he was privately ordained in London, and on June 2, 1687, he began his regular ministry as non-conformist pastor of a Presbyterian congregation at Chester. He remained in this position for 25 years. After declining several times offers from London congregations, he finally accepted a call to Hackney, London, and began his ministry there May 18, 1712, shortly before his death.Henry’s reputation rests upon his renowned 6 volume commentary, An Exposition of the Old and New Testaments (1708-10, known also as Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible). He lived to complete it only as far as to the end of the Acts, but after his death other like-minded authors prepared the remainder from Henry’s manuscripts. This work was long celebrated as the best English commentary for devotional purposes and the expanded edition was initially published in 1896. Instead of critical exposition, Henry focuses on practical suggestion, and his commentaries contain rich stores of truths. There is also a smaller devotional commentary on the Bible from Henry known as Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary. (Also included on the CD!)Spurgeon used Henry’s commentary and commended it heartily, saying: « Every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least. » Matthew Henry died in Cheshire due to a stroke, on June 22, 1714. About the Author: William Wake (1657-1737), English archbishop, was born in Blandford Forum, Dorset, on January 26 1657, and educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He took orders, and in 1682 went to Paris as chaplain to the ambassador Richard Graham, Viscount Preston (1648-1695). Here he became acquainted with many of the savants of the capital, and was much interested in French clerical affairs. He also collated some Paris manuscripts of the Greek Testament for John Fell, bishop of Oxford. He returned to England in 1685; in 1688 he became preacher at Gray’s Inn, and in 1689 he received a canonry of Christ Church, Oxford. In 1693 he was appointed rector of St James’s, Westminster. Ten years later he became dean of Exeter, and in 1705 he was consecrated bishop of Lincoln. He was translated to the see of Canterbury in 1716 on the death of Thomas Tenison. During 1718 he negotiated with leading French churchmen about a projected union of the Gallican and English churches to resist the claims of Rome (see J. H. Lupton, Archbishop Wake and the Project of Union, 1896). In dealing with nonconformity he was tolerant, and even advocated a revision of the Prayer Book if that would allay the scruples of dissenters. His writings are numerous, the chief being his State of the Church and Clergy of England … historically deduced (London, 1703). He died at Lambeth on January 24 1736/7 (courtesy of Wikipedia).
